Discover Baltic Sea National Parks and Nature Reserves

The Baltic Sea is far more than a destination for beach days or holidays in a rented cottage. Between coastal forests, bodden waters, moors and dunes, you find a landscape rich in biodiversity and quiet moments in nature. Those who take a closer look discover valuable protected areas where rare animals live and original habitats are preserved.

For travellers who want to combine relaxation with time outdoors, the national parks and nature reserves along the Baltic Sea are especially appealing. They invite you to go hiking, watch wildlife and enjoy wide views across a coastline that still feels untouched in many places.

Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft: Open spaces, water and birdlife

The Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park is one of the best known natural areas on the German Baltic Sea coast. Across around 805 square kilometres, it offers a varied landscape of forests, moors, lakes, beaches and coastal zones. This diversity makes the park an important habitat for many different animal and plant species.

The birdlife is particularly impressive. White-tailed eagles and cranes are among the most famous inhabitants of the region. The seagrass meadows also play an important role in maintaining ecological balance. A special tip for nature lovers is birdwatching on the island of Ummanz. With a bit of patience, you can also spot rarer species there, such as kingfishers and wrynecks.

Jasmund National Park: Beech forest and chalk cliffs

On the island of Rügen, Jasmund National Park is another natural gem on the Baltic Sea. Covering roughly 30 square kilometres, it is especially known for its ancient beech forests. They form part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage and shape the distinctive character of this landscape.

The park is most famous for its white chalk cliffs. Sheer rock faces, bright stone and sweeping views over the Baltic Sea make this one of the region’s most striking natural sights. A walk here reveals a strong contrast in a small area, where dense forest and open coastline lie close together.

Geltinger Birk: Rare species in Schleswig-Holstein

Important nature reserves can also be found away from the large national parks. Geltinger Birk in Schleswig-Holstein is a good example. On 773 hectares it provides safe habitats for rare animal species, including white-tailed eagles, lapwings and little ringed plovers.

Salt marshes and dunes also shape the character of this area. Anyone who wants to explore the coastal landscape on foot and enjoy some peace and quiet is in the right place here. The interplay between open spaces and protected zones is a major part of its appeal.

Nature experiences between bodden and coastal forest

Another important protected area is the Pomeranian Boddenlandschaft in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Over more than 80,000 hectares, it offers an impressive mix of bodden waters, dunes and coastal forests. The importance of this natural area becomes especially clear during the crane migrations in spring and autumn.

Here the Baltic Sea reveals a quiet yet powerful side. Those who take their time not only enjoy wide horizons but also develop a sense for the diversity and vulnerability of these coastal landscapes. This is what makes the Baltic Sea’s national parks and nature reserves rewarding destinations for a more mindful holiday.
